Simple Ways to Keep Pests from Bugging You This Summer

Hi friends,

The kids are out of school, people are traveling, and everyone is trying to spend a little more time outside before Texas decides to turn the thermostat all the way up. 😄

Unfortunately, mosquitoes, ticks, ants, and wasps are becoming more active too. Here are a few simple ways to stay ahead of them this summer.

🦟 Summer Pest Tip: Don’t Let Mosquitoes Take Over

Mosquitoes don’t need much standing water to get started – as little as a tablespoon of water, or the equivalent of a single bottle cap. After rain or watering, take a quick walk around your yard and check:

• Flower pots
• Buckets
• Kids’ toys
• Bird baths
• Low spots in the yard
• Gutters and drainage areas

Dumping standing water regularly can make a big difference.

🌿 Watch for Ticks in Tall Grass + Wooded Areas

If your family spends time in tall grass, wooded areas, parks, trails, or around overgrown edges of the yard, ticks are something to keep in mind.

A few simple reminders:

• Keep grass trimmed
• Clear brush and overgrown areas when possible
• Check kids and pets after outdoor time
• Pay attention around ankles, socks, waistbands, and hairlines

Ticks are small, but they can become a big concern if they go unnoticed.

🐝 Stinging Insects Are Active Too

Wasps and other stinging insects often build nests around:

• Eaves
• Patio covers
• Outdoor light fixtures
• Fence lines
• Sheds
• Play structures

Small nests are much easier to handle early than once they’ve had time to grow.

If you see activity around your home, it’s worth having it checked before it becomes a bigger issue.

🧳 Summer Travel Reminder: Check for Bed Bugs

If you’re traveling this summer, take a few minutes to check your hotel room before unpacking.

A few quick tips:

• Place luggage in the bathroom or on a hard surface while you check
• Look along mattress seams and corners
• Check behind the headboard if possible
• Look for small dark spots, shed skins, or live bugs
• Keep luggage off the bed and floor when you can

And when you get home, washing and drying travel clothes on high heat can help reduce the chance of bringing anything unwanted home with you.
